🎬 Shot Composition Guide
(For Aspiring TFI Filmmakers – Simple, Practical & Real)
🎥 What is Shot Composition?
Shot composition means how you arrange everything inside your frame.
👉 Who is in the frame
👉 Where they stand
👉 What we see behind them
👉 How close or far the camera is
Simple line:
“What you show + how you show = how people feel”

👀 Why Shot Composition Matters
Same story → different feeling based on composition
A simple scene can feel mass, emotional, or dull
Audience connects without you explaining anything
👉 In TFI, think of:
Hero intro = powerful composition
Love scene = soft, close composition
Villain entry = dark, dominant composition
🎯 1. Rule of Focus (What should people see first?
Always ask yourself:
👉 “Where should the audience look first?”
✔ Keep that thing clear
✔ Remove distractions
✔ Use light or position to highlight it
Example:
Hero entry → Don’t clutter the frame
Just show HIM clearly
📏 2. Rule of Thirds (Don’t always keep in center)

Imagine your screen divided into 3 parts.
👉 Place your subject slightly left or right
👉 It looks more natural and cinematic
Use when:
Conversations
Walking shots
Emotional scenes
🎭 3. Use Background to Tell Story

Background is not just “behind”…
It’s part of your story.
✔ Empty space → loneliness
✔ Crowd → pressure
✔ Temple → devotion
✔ Rain → sadness
Example (TFI style):
Hero sitting alone + big empty road = loneliness 🔥
📐 4. Distance = Emotion
How far your camera is changes emotion.
Close shot → Emotion, tears, intensity
Medium shot → Normal conversation
Wide shot → Loneliness, scale
👉 Want goosebumps?
Go CLOSE.
👉 Want loneliness?
Go WIDE.
🔺 5. Balance Your Frame
Don’t make your frame feel “heavy” on one side.
✔ If hero is left → add something on right
✔ Use objects, people, or light
Simple check:
👉 Does the frame feel complete?
🔦 6. Use Light Smartly

Light is your biggest weapon.
✔ Bright light → Happy, positive
✔ Dark shadows → Mystery, danger
👉 Even with phone:
Use sunlight from window = FREE CINEMA LOOK
🎬 7. Movement Adds Life
Don’t keep everything still.
✔ Small camera movement = big impact
✔ Move slowly → emotion
✔ Shake slightly → tension
🧠 Simple Formula to Remember
Before every shot, ask:
What should people feel?
What should they look at first?
How close should I go?
